Evolution vs. Creation
The scientific facts involved in the theory of evolution and creation are complicated. Every year scientists discover more, and deeper facts about living things, biochemistry, botany, physics, and the laws of "thermodynamics". Neither evolution nor creation can be proven beyond a shadow of a doubt. When it comes right down to it, a person's belief in creation or evolution is a matter of faith.
Faith is something that you can't exactly prove. You just believe it. Evolution is a theory because it has never been ‘proven'. Likewise, creation can not be proven either. Everyone has faith in something. We believe because someone has convinced us, or because we have chosen to believe certain things. Whatever we believe, whatever our faith is, has implications for the decisions we make.
There are basically two possibilities:
The World is Infinite -------- or ---------- The World is finite
If the world and all that exists is infinite, that means it has always existed and always will exist... then there is no question of where this world came from. There is no need to know ‘if' there is a God or not. We were not created, we just are. Not many people believe this.
If the world is finite, it had a definite beginning and will have a definite end.
That presents us with two more possibilities:
The World came into being on its own ----or--- The World was created
If the world came into being on its own, then it did so by means of evolution or some similar means, and science just hasn't found all the answers yet. It means there either is no God, or -if there is a God- He did not create us, but watched as the process of evolution came about. We are, therefore, here by chance.
If the world was created, then there is a Creator (God). Over the world there are different beliefs about ‘God', what He/She is like, and so forth. Presuming that ‘God' is One, Singular, Supreme Being, presents us with two more choices:
God is involved with His Creation --- or --- God is not involved with Creation
Either God created the world and left it to go on its own; or He remains intricately
involved with the process of life, with creation, and with us. If God is caring and loving, He had a reason for creating us, and we have a purpose for being here - regardless of our individual strengths or weaknesses, regardless of good and evil.
If there is no God, or if God created us and left us on our own. If He doesn't care about what we do, or we are just here for his entertainment (like T.V.) ... Then our lives are meaningless. Whatever we want to do is O.K. there are no absolute moral standards, and there is no real value to individual lives.
This is why there are debates today on the issues of homosexuality, abortion, infanticide, and mercy killing. If we evolved, then there is no reason to prohibit anyone's enjoyment, or allow anyone to suffer. Infants, children, adults, the elderly, who suffer or are mentally, or physically ‘below' ‘normal' are expendable. Why cry over a loved one who dies? If someone we love is suffering, why not just put them out of their misery? That's what we do with animals. Live it up while you can. Eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow you may die. Grab all you can (without regard to anyone else, or any repercussions) and then kill yourself. Have fun and die. There's an easy solution to the AIDS and starvation in Africa, the over population in China, and abuse of children and women in the Middle-East. Kill them. Put them out of their misery. Survival of the fittest, like the wild animals, only the strongest, smartest, healthiest, need to live, and with lower population, those who do live will be wealthier and happier.
But, If God does exist, created the world, and cares for each of us. Then we are special, each one, and have purpose. We then need to respect all life, and treat each person as the image of the One who created us.
Here is where (for me) the implications determine which I will believe. For, it wouldn't matter if I were the most weak minded person on earth, and all the scientists 100 times more knowledgeable (than they are now) and saying they have all the answers to the questions of our origin. I would not ‘want' to believe that I or anyone I know, were a mere accident, and our lives essentially worthless. I don't want to believe I evolved from a monkey or anything else. My life would not have been worth the suffering I have experienced and witnessed.
Here's another thing to consider: If the world did evolve, and we are all here by chance; no God, ..... Then having faith in God, and believing in the creation, will not do me nor anyone else any harm. In fact, belief in God, and the moral standards in the Bible are what keep us and all human beings living in harmony with each other. Without such standards, we would all soon destroy ourselves and this world. On the other hand, If there is a Creator-God, when each of our lives is over (which it will be for each one- no one lives forever), Then how will we answer for rejecting the God who created us and revealed Himself to us (through the prophets, Jesus Christ, and other believers, as well as our own conscience) as well as disregarding His moral commands for our lives? What if all the Bible is true?
To be a believer in God, to place my faith and hope in One who Created everything, will only have been for the good should my faith prove true or not. But, to not believe in God de-values our lives, and can bring the worst consequences when we find that there is - after all - a God and life eternal to be shared with Him.
